CANYON, Texas (KVII) — West Texas A&M University police are warning students after continued reports of electric scooter thefts across campus.
The scooters have been taken from bike racks, residence hall areas and locations near academic buildings when left unattended or unsecured, according to a university timely warning issued Tuesday.
University Police said the thefts tend to occur intermittently throughout the year but are more common at the beginning of a new academic year. The department has increased patrols in areas considered at higher risk.
Under the federal Clery Act, electric scooter thefts are classified as motor vehicle thefts. Police asked anyone whose scooter is stolen to report it promptly so the incident can be documented, investigated and included in required crime statistics.
The warning follows a similar advisory issued by WT police in September 2025, when the university reported multiple scooter thefts over several weeks.
Police recommend riders use a high-quality U-lock or chain lock to secure scooters to a fixed bike rack, store them indoors when possible and register them through the university’s Operation Lock Out program to help with recovery if stolen.
