SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio homeowners could see their property taxes increase under the city’s proposed 2027 budget.
The $4.4 billion spending plan would increase the city’s budget by about 4.1% and includes a proposed approximate 3.93% increase in property taxes for homeowners.
The city’s memo lists the following rates in its proposal for the Fiscal Year 2027:
Homestead property average taxable value is $231,356
Median-valued homestead property is $197,850
Property tax bill for the current Fiscal Year at $0.54159 based on median value: $1,086.51
Property tax bill for the proposed tax rate of $0.56288 based on median value: $1,113.66
Property tax bill for the no-new-revenue rate of $0.54773 based on median value: $1,083.68
“We don’t want to pay no more,” Diana Flores Uriegas, a San Antonio homeowner, said.
Uriegas said she lives month to month on a fixed income as an elderly homeowner and has to save up to pay her annual property taxes.
Sara, another homeowner who attended a public comment session hosted by the city, said she agrees with the increase.
“I think it’s a good idea because I believe that San Antonio is pretty good about what they do with the taxes,” Sara said.
Antonio Diaz, a homeowner who is against the proposed property tax increase, cited the San Antonio Spurs relocation as a reason not to support the increase.
“If our city has enough money to give to billionaires, why should we, the average taxpayer, have our property taxes increased,” Diaz said. “If billionaires could fund their own efforts so that we would not have to increase our property taxes, it would be great.”
Sara, a homeowner in favor of the proposed property tax increase, said she understands people who disagree with the budget.
“I always encourage people, if they don’t feel that property value is being reflected positively or accurately, they should probably protest,” Sara said.
The budget has not yet been approved. City Council is scheduled to adopt the spending plan on Sept. 17, and it must be approved no later than Sept. 27.
Another public comment session on the proposed tax rate increase is scheduled for Sept. 10.
