SAN ANTONIO – Thursday Night Lights is back with a heavyweight matchup as two of the area’s top-ranked teams meet at Farris Stadium.
Two-time defending Class 5A state champion Smithson Valley takes on Class 6A Sotomayor in our TNL Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and you can watch the game live on CW SA.
Both teams enter the matchup ranked in the TNL Top 10, but they arrive after very different opening weeks.
Sotomayor is coming off an impressive 17-0 shutout victory over Clark, a win that helped the Wildcats crack the latest TNL Top 10.
Smithson Valley’s opener didn’t get the chance to reach the finish line. The Rangers were leading Cinco Ranch before lightning forced the game to be canceled.
Now the No. 1 Rangers get another chance to begin their pursuit of a third straight state championship.
For both teams, tonight’s game should provide an early look at just how they stack up.
Sotomayor coach Juan Morales sees the matchup as an opportunity for his players to experience firsthand what a championship-caliber program looks like. The Wildcats are hoping to make a deep playoff run of their own this season and have one more non-district game before opening district play against Holmes.
Smithson Valley, meanwhile, is once again the team everyone is chasing.
The Rangers have built their success around a strong running game that can attack defenses with multiple players and in different ways. They can also create big plays through the air, giving Sotomayor plenty to prepare for.
With district play approaching for both teams, neither coach is expected to completely reinvent the playbook Thursday night. But don’t be surprised to see a few wrinkles when two Top 10 teams take the field under the TNL spotlight.
For Smithson Valley, the climb toward another championship continues.
For Sotomayor, it’s an opportunity to find out just how close the Wildcats are to championship level.
