The moment I cracked the door to Verso I was immediately greeted by a bright chalk board schedule hanging from the wall, full of delightfully scribbled doodles and real handwriting that feels refreshing in an age where businesses are too lazy to decorate their spaces with anything but A.I. generated art. Right next to the chalk board was an old wooden piece of furniture that felt like the kind of Hoosier cabinet where your grandma displays her fine China and embarrassing pictures of the family.

The rest of the cafe feels like that. A warm, bright, welcoming room in your grandmas house where the light billows in over the potted plants and a comfortably worn in couch. The seating is spacious with wooden tables that all look different and a bit chaotic in a cozy way, but that accommodates everyone from couples on a quick lunch date to the UTEP study group settling in for a long evening.
A chic looking bar with soft lit bulbs sits in the middle of the cafe, stools wrapping around the entire thing where laptops sit open as cocktails and coffees are made in tandem. Even on a mild afternoon, customers flow in and out, the stage with a cozy bookshelf background echoing sentiments of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series sits at the other end of the cafe. The lone microphone stands ready for the series of performers, artists, and presenters alike that are scheduled on the chalk board across the room. The walls proudly boast local artists and their works, currently a broad display of art from the incredible Xingaderas.
Beyond the bar, baristas and bartenders hustle past each other, tending to guests scattered throughout the cafe as calm music creates the ambiance. One that shifts depending on what night you come in, what time of day you show up, what artist has taken the stage to create a new vibe for Verso.
Pau, one of the owners of Verso, mentioned to me something that felt refreshing. The food, the coffee, fresh pastries, the space itself is curated by artists. Every employee, whether they are cooks in the kitchen putting together your meal or one of the waiters mopping the bathroom floors between tables, all of the people working at Verso are artists as well. I think this was an important detail for me because artists tend to understand more than business people what makes something warm and welcoming, not for the sake of making money, but for the sake of creating something that feels unique.

Verso feels fresh and even though I only had enough cash on me that morning to get a coffee, the vibe of this new El Paso space felt so good I had to write about it. They have a breakfast, lunch, AND dinner menu that looked amazing. The breakfast food smelled incredible but since I couldn’t try any, I suppose you’ll just have to go and try it yourself.
