As Spooky season creeps closer, a candy company is recalling several batches of its Halloween treats over an undeclared allergen that could trigger “serious or life-threatening” reactions, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Crystal Temptations, a New Jersey-based candy company, is recalling its Halloween Chocolatey Eyeballs after discovering that some of the treats contain whey, a milk ingredient not listed on the packaging. The candy was sold at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods and Sierra Trading Post stores in 13 states, including Texas.

The recall began after a TJX analyst discovered that the chocolate eyeballs contained whey but were packaged without listing milk as an ingredient, according to the FDA. A subsequent investigation found that a “temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes” was responsible.

The recalled Chocolatey Eyeballs are sold under the Crystal Temptations brand and can be identified by one of the following style numbers:

For most trick-or-treaters, the issue may sound like a packaging problem and nothing more. But for people with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity, eating the candy could cause a serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, the FDA said.

No illnesses had been reported in connection with the recalled products as of the FDA’s Aug. 31 announcement. Still, Crystal Temptations urges consumers to “destroy” any recalled Chocolatey Eyeballs they may have at home.

Refunds are not available at the point of sale, but Crystal Temptations will issue them directly to consumers who provide proof of purchase. The company can be reached at 201-246-7990 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.
