SAN ANTONIO – A now-former Southwest ISD police officer was taken into custody Sunday after allegedly leaving a child alone for several hours on the Southeast Side, according to the preliminary report.
San Antonio police responded at 3:45 a.m. in the 8200 block of Inner Circle Drive after someone reported a child crying in a hallway, the preliminary report said.
Officers found a 5-year-old boy who claimed he had been left alone for an unknown amount of time, SAPD said. Police said the child was not injured.
Several hours later, the suspect returned to the location and was arrested by SAPD. The preliminary report identified the suspect as Melanie Miriam Gonzales, 23.
Gonzales was charged with abandoning or endangering a child without intent to return, a state jail felony, Bexar County court records indicate.
She was booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center Monday and posted her $10,000 bond to be released the same day, records show.
KSAT was made aware of her employment at Southwest Independent School District and reached out to confirm.
“We can confirm that she was employed as a School Resource Officer with the Southwest ISD Police Department for approximately two years,” a spokesperson for the district said in an email.
The spokesperson said Gonzales resigned after she was arrested.
The district said the arrest did not happen on campus property or involve a Southwest ISD student.
