EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso International Airport will receive $8.7 million in federal funding to rehabilitate its aircraft apron, the area where planes are loaded, unloaded, and serviced.
The funding is part of a $481 million Federal Aviation Administration investment announced Thursday by U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy.
The Airport Infrastructure Grants program is distributing 191 grants to airports in 36 states and two U.S. territories ahead of the Labor Day travel weekend.
Airport officials said the grant will support long-term infrastructure improvements at El Paso International Airport.
We are pleased that the El Paso International Airport has been selected for a federal grant to support long-term infrastructure improvements,” the airport said in a statement. “Investing in upgrading our apron, the area of the airport where we load, unload and service aircrafts, will enhance our airport’s ability to serve El Paso and the surrounding communities.
FAA officials said the grants are intended to improve safety and operations while helping airports meet current and future travel demands.

Funding can be used for projects including terminal improvements, baggage system upgrades, runway and taxiway rehabilitation, airport planning and roadway improvements.
“From our regional hubs to some of America’s busiest airports, we are investing in critical infrastructure that will provide American families with a more seamless, efficient travel experience for years to come,” Duffy said in the announcement.
The El Paso grant was among the larger awards announced.
Other projects include $100 million for runway, taxiway and terminal work at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and $30.3 million for terminal construction at San Diego International Airport.
