In Houston, waking up to find your car sitting on blocks after thieves stole its tires is an all-too-familiar experience. And in some neighborhoods, it happens far too often, according to city records obtained by Chron.
Records obtained through a public records request show the Houston Police Department (HPD) logged 1,252 incidents included in a data set involving stolen tires, wheels and rims between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2026.
Chron asked residents on Nextdoor to share their experiences, and several described just that.
“Several years ago, my niece had the tires stolen twice from her Tahoe,” a Braeswood resident commented.
“This happens all the time,” wrote a resident of Greenway Plaza Central.
Others were even unsurprised by the question.
“Welcome to Houston,” a resident of The Forest wrote. And they may have a point.
But where in the city is this happening most often? An analysis of the data from the first six months of this year reveals where drivers may want to keep a closer eye on their cars.

These 10 ZIP codes accounted for more than a third of vehicle parts thefts
HPD recorded 1,114 incidents classified as ”Theft of Motor Vehicle Parts or Accessory” in the first half of this year. Of those, 421 incidents fell into these 10 ZIP codes-accounting for roughly 38 percent of the overall total:
77077: Lakes of Parkway, Parkway Village, Briar Forest and west Houston’s Energy Corridor.
77054: Astrodome/NRG Park, South Main and the southern edge of the Texas Medical Center.
77042: Westchase, Briargrove and the Westheimer corridor in west Houston
77063: Woodlake–Briar Meadow and Braeburn Glen in southwest Houston, southwest of the Galleria.
77008:
Houston Heights, including Shady Acres, Timbergrove and Lazybrook
77082: Westheimer and Mission Bend, including Briar Forest West and west Houston near Eldridge.
77079:
Memorial West, Nottingham Forest and part of the western Energy Corridor.
77036: Chinatown, Sharpstown, and the Mahatma Gandhi District in southwest Houston.
77084: Bear Creek and Copperfield west of Highway 6 near Clay Road and Tuckerton Road.

These four ZIP codes tied for stolen cars
In addition to theft of motor vehicle parts and accessories, HPD recorded a total of 28 incidents classified as ‘Motor Vehicle Theft’ across 24 ZIP codes in the first six months of the year.
Four ZIP codes tied for the highest number of reported vehicle thefts, each with two incidents:
77016:
Kashmere Gardens, Trinity Gardens and Settegast in northeast Houston.
77029:
Wayside and the Houston Ship Channel area in east Houston, near the Baytown side of the metro.
77060: Greenspoint and the North Freeway corridor in north Houston, near the Aldine area.
77092: Garden Oaks, Oak Forest North and Candlelight Estates in north-central Houston.
The top 3 Houston ZIP codes for vehicle burglary
HPD also recorded a total of 29 incidents, classified as ‘Burglary, Breaking and Entering.’ These ZIP codes ranked top three:
77091: Acres Homes and Highland Heights, portions of Independence Heights.
77063: Woodlake–Briar Meadow and Braeburn Glen in southwest Houston, southwest of the Galleria.
77082: Westheimer and Mission Bend, including Briar Forest West and west Houston near Eldridge.
