Star Trek is officially turning 60, and if there was ever a good excuse to spend a few hours at the movies revisiting some sci-fi classics, I think this is it.
The original Star Trek premiered on September 8, 1966, introducing audiences to Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew of the USS Enterprise. Six decades, countless movies and several TV series later, it’s pretty safe to say that little show did okay for itself.
To celebrate the big 6-0, some of the movies and episodes that helped start it all are heading back to theaters.
Star Trek Celebrates 60 Years on the Big Screen
From September 4 through September 8, theaters across the country are celebrating Star Trek’s 60th anniversary by bringing classic episodes from the original series and the first four Star Trek movies back to the big screen.
Several of the screenings even pair a classic episode with one of the movies. The movies are also being presented in restored 4K, so even if you’ve watched them a million times at home, this is a chance to see the Enterprise and its crew on the big screen again- or maybe for the first time!
And because no movie event is complete without collectible popcorn buckets these days, fans can also keep an eye out for special Star Trek 60th anniversary popcorn buckets at AMC and Cinemark theaters.

Before Star Trek boldly went where no one had gone before, its creator got his start right here in El Paso. Gene Roddenberry was born here in El Paso in 1921.
His family moved to Los Angeles when he was young, so Roddenberry didn’t grow up in the Sun City, but I love that his connection to El Paso hasn’t been forgotten. In fact, we have a pretty fitting reminder of it right here in town: the Gene Roddenberry Planetarium.

El Paso ISD’s planetarium was named in honor of the Star Trek creator and continues introducing El Paso students and families to space and astronomy.
The El Paso-born guy who went on to create one of the most famous science-fiction universes of all time has a planetarium named after him in his hometown? That’s pretty cool.
Sixty years after the Enterprise first appeared on television, El Paso still has its own little connection to the Star Trek universe.
Live long and prosper, El Paso!
