The Giants have spent plenty of time talking about a new offense. Sunday night against Dallas is where the talk has to turn into something opponents actually have to handle.
Cam Skattebo gives them a blunt way to do it. The second-year back is healthy after a rookie season that ended early with an injury, and he heads into Week 1 with the sort of physical running style that can make a defense stop enjoying a nationally televised opener.
The Cowboys know they are getting a division rival in a loud building. They also know Skattebo is not coming into the game looking for a polite four-yard gain and a pat on the helmet.

Giants need Cam Skattebo to make Dallas tackle
Skattebo’s first season changed once the Giants began giving him a larger role, starting in Week 4. His year did not get to finish the way he wanted, but the point for 2026 is straightforward: he is available now, and the Giants have a back who can bring some edge to an offense built around a young quarterback.
I do not need to see him get 25 carries in the opener. I want to see Dallas feel him in the first quarter. Make the linebackers take on blocks. Turn a manageable third-and-two into a real problem. Let Jaxson Dart use play action without every defender already leaning toward the pass.
The Giants do not need Skattebo to carry the entire offense. They need him to give the offense a personality when the game gets physical, because Dallas will test that immediately.
Giants have a Week 1 chance to show their edge
The opener at MetLife Stadium is not a preseason showcase. The Giants are hosting the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, which means every snap will get picked apart before the final whistle.
Skattebo is one of the players who can settle the game down. A few hard runs can keep the offense on schedule, help the line avoid obvious passing downs and keep the crowd involved. That sounds basic because it is. It also matters when a season opens against Dallas.
