Two Fort Worth-area football programs seized massive wins Thursday: Mansfield Timberview and Arlington Lamar.
Timberview took down Denton Ryan, a state power, 35-30. The Wolves showcased an ability to compete with the state’s best, and that will make them dangerous come playoff time. According to the Dallas Morning News, wide receiver Trysten Shaw, a Tulsa pledge, was the standout with 11 catches for 220 yards and two scores.
The Ryan Raiders have been a consistent playoff staple, going toe-to-toe with programs as prominent as 12 time state champion Aledo. For the Wolves, the win marks a solid jump from last year, when they fell to Denton Ryan and Argyle in one score contests.
The statement win comes after a year of steady growth under head coach Jacody Coleman, who was hired ahead of the 2025 season. In 2024, the Wolves lost to Ryan 24-0 en route to a 6-5 overall record. In 2025, Timberview went 7-4 but stayed much more competitive before falling in the bi-district round.
Now, Timberview may be ready for a deep playoff run.
Timberview (2-0), ranked No. 2 in the Fort Worth-area Class 5A rankings only behind Richland, will face Richardson Friday, Sept. 11, before starting district play — the Wolves are expected to compete for a district title against solid programs like Midlothian Heritage and Arlington Seguin.
A milestone moment for Arlington Lamar
Arlington Lamar’s victory was just as prominent, but in a different way.
The Vikings won their first contest with Zach Najarro serving as head football coach. In May, he was promoted from defensive coordinator and replaced Billy Skinner, who departed to become Grapevine-Colleyville ISD’s Executive Director of Athletics.
Lamar (1-1) took down a solid Crowley program, handing the Eagles a 35-31 loss, after overcoming a 19-7 first half deficit.
The Vikings will face Justin Northwest Thursday, Sept. 10, before starting District 3-6A play against an Arlington ISD rival: Bowie.
The Volunteers have been the kingpin of Arlington ISD football the last two seasons, but several squads like Lamar, Arlington Martin and Arlington seem to have made solid offseason progress. In Week 1, Arlington took down area power Byron Nelson.
