A 12-year-old remains in critical condition following the Saturday night crash on State Highway 171, according to Texas DPS.
HILLSBORO, Texas — Two people were killed and two others critically injured in a five-vehicle crash north of Hillsboro Saturday night, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
DPS troopers responded around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 5 to the crash on State Highway 171 near County Road 4223.
Investigators said a Ford Fiesta traveling north passed a pickup truck before returning to the right lane and striking equipment being towed by a northbound farm tractor. The collision caused the farm equipment to detach.

A southbound Chevrolet Traverse and Ford F-150 then crashed into objects left in the roadway, DPS said. The driver and passenger of the F-150 and a 12-year-old passenger from the Traverse got out of their vehicles and were standing in the road when another vehicle struck them.
Katherine Barton, 39, of Arlington, was pronounced dead at the scene. Zachary Barton, 39, also of Arlington, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The 12-year-old remains in critical condition. The driver of the Ford Fiesta was also taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
No other injuries were reported.
Investigators suspect alcohol may have contributed to the initial crash. DPS said the investigation remains active and the victims’ next of kin have been notified.
