Two Arlington residents were killed and two other people were injured Saturday night in a multi-vehicle crash in Hillsboro, according to KWTX and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Zachary and Katherine Barton, both 39, were killed in the five-vehicle crash on State Highway 171 near County Road 4223, KWTX reported.
A farm tractor towing equipment was traveling northbound with its lights flashing when another northbound vehicle, a Ford Fiesta, passed a pickup truck and re-entered the right lane, according to a DPS report obtained by KWTX.
When the Fiesta entered the right lane, it struck the farm equipment, causing the equipment to detach from the tractor, according to the report.
Moments later, a southbound Chevrolet Traverse and a Ford F-150 crashed into objects on the roadway, KWTX reported. The Bartons, who were traveling in the F-150, and a 12-year-old passenger of the Traverse, exited the vehicles and were standing on the roadway when they were struck by another vehicle.
The 12-year-old passenger of the Traverse was hospitalized in critical condition, according to KWTX. One other person was injured, but details on their condition were not immediately available Monday.
DPS investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the initial crash, according to the report.
