BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Drivers in northwest Bexar County say traffic on FM 1560 has become increasingly frustrating, with some three-mile trips taking up to 30 minutes.
Richard, a Bexar County homeowner who contacted KSAT about the congestion, said part of the drive home from Loop 1604 to his house recently took nearly half an hour, and it is just three miles.
Other drivers said traffic is especially difficult from lunchtime through the evening. They also complained about long waits at traffic lights, difficulty exiting nearby neighborhoods and drivers cutting each other off.
“It’s always bad from, like, honestly like lunchtime to nine o’clock at night,” Isaiah Garcia said.
Another woman said, “It takes a long time to get out of the exit of the houses.”
The Texas Department of Transportation told KSAT that help is on the way.
The agency has a project planned to expand FM 1560 from Bandera Road to Culebra Road. The project will stretch roughly five miles.
The two-lane road will be widened to four lanes and include a center turn lane, bike lanes and sidewalks. TxDOT also plans to make improvements at intersections along the route.
“The FM 1560 Expansion project aims to address increasing traffic demands and improve safety from SH 16 to FM 471,” TxDOT told KSAT in a statement.
Traffic volumes in the area are projected to double over the next 20 years, according to TxDOT.
While portions of the project have already begun, like utility work, TxDOT said drivers should not see major construction until the new year.
Drivers said the improvements are overdue as development continues to bring more people to the area.
“I would hope that with future developments out there in the city, that this is looked at first before you do the development,” Richard said.
One driver said traffic has gotten noticeably worse over the past several years.
“I’ve been over here 10 years, so the last couple years have really gotten bad,” she said.
