EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A collaboration between Sony Music Latin and Cinemex is bringing one of the most historic performances in Mexican history to the big screen.
“Juan Gabriel: Mi Primer Bellas Artes” will show the legendary Mexican singer’s 1990 performance at Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes with restored footage. Showings will begin on Sept. 15 in the United States.
“I’m sure you’re going to enjoy watching this concert in the movie theater,” Maria Jose Cuevas, director of documentaries on the film, said. “It’s really an amazing experience. And, it’s the most important concert in history.”
Cuevas told KTSM the performance has had a large cultural impact on Mexican music and culture. Music from Juan Gabriel’s performance during the concert at Bellas Artes was used all over social media for the Mexican national team during the World Cup.
An announcement from Sony Music Vision and Fathom Entertainment said the work will feature a previously unseen introduction with rehearsal footage and material from Juan Gabriel’s personal archive.
In Juarez, which Juan Gabriel called home, the show is already available for viewing at local theaters. But showings in El Paso will begin on Sept. 15 ahead of Mexican Independence Day.
The performance will be available for viewing at Cinemark and Premiere cinemas.
Cuevas promises the film will bring the performance from over 30 years ago to life, but also had to make some decisions about what to show. She also directed the Netflix documentary about the singer, which was called “Juan Gabriel: Debo, Puedo Y Quiero.”
“The 1990 concert lasted almost three hours, and for this theatrical version, we had to create a shorter version, making the difficult decision to leave some songs out, and curating which songs everyone really knows,” Cuevas said. “Because the idea is for the movie theater to become a massive karaoke, with people singing in the theater.”
