Dallas Police investigate a shooting in Lake Highlands on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026.
Take 5 Oil Change shares the parking lot with Family Dollar and showed NBC 5 surveillance video that appeared to show someone shooting at a white car in the parking lot at about 12:21 p.m., and that car then crossing Walnut Hill.
A person who lives near the intersection said he was in his backyard next to the store when he heard gunshots.
“I heard a crazy disturbance, gunshots, when I was in my garage,” said Landry Honeycutt, who lives nearby in the Highland Park neighborhood and described the shots as “rapid-fire.”
“I’d never heard gunshots other than firing a gun on my own. I’d never heard one that close in my backyard and yeah, it was pretty crazy,” said Honeycutt.
Surveillance video showed the white car believed to be the victim’s roll across the lot after shots were fired.
“I opened up my gate, and that’s when I saw the car had crossed the street and stopped, and then shortly after that the sirens started coming in,” Honeycutt described.
For hours, drivers were rerouted along Walnut Hill Lane as the investigation unfolded. NBC 5 cameras on scene captured dozens of shell casings marked by police.
The identity of the driver has not been confirmed and will be released after their family has been notified of their death.
Police have not released any information about what led to the shooting or provided any description of the shooter. No arrests have been announced.
