SAN ANTONIO – Two unbeaten teams meet Friday night at South San Stadium when Southwest Legacy faces South San in KSAT 12’s Big Game Coverage Game of the Week.
The matchup features rivalry history, early-season momentum and an opportunity for both programs to see where they stand.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday. Robert Bruce’s Southwest Legacy Titans, ranked No. 11 in Class 6A in 12’s Top 12, will take on Phil Barron’s South San Bobcats, ranked No. 12 in Class 5A.
Southwest Legacy enters the game 2-0 as it prepares for its first run through District 30-6A. The Titans moved up to Class 6A this season and are looking to prove their early success can translate against tougher competition.
“Momentum’s everything, especially moving up to 6A,” Titans senior quarterback Aiden Garcia said. “We’ve got to get ready for new competition, more people. It’s just a new ballgame all the way around compared to 5A.”
Legacy has already dealt with unusual early-season adversity. Its Week 1 game was delayed by weather and eventually kicked off at 9 a.m. on a Friday, forcing the Titans to adjust quickly.
“We went into that Thursday game pumped up for the first week, and then we got shut down,” Titans senior tight end and defensive end Devon Lucio said. “We had to carry that same momentum and excitement into the morning.”
South San is 1-0 and adjusting after graduating last season’s starting quarterback and several key playmakers. Despite those losses, the Bobcats opened the season with a win and are looking to build on that performance.
“It was very important that we beat Harlandale, and they came out strong,” South San junior quarterback Jacob Sepeda said. “It was a close fight, but we won that one inch.”
The Bobcats know they will face a major test against Legacy’s speed and pressure.
“They’re going to be a tough team,” Bobcats junior running back Isaiah Rodriguez said. “They’re fast and they blitz a lot, so we’re going to be working on that this week.”
“They’re a pretty solid team,” South San senior fullback and defensive end Cash Winters added. “We can’t look past them. We have to do our prep, watch film, work and be on top of our game to beat them.”
The rivalry has grown in recent years, especially after the teams shared the same district last season. South San won last year’s meeting late in the season with a playoff berth at stake, a result that still motivates the Titans.
For both teams, Friday’s matchup is also an important tune-up before district play begins.
“Having big games is very important for us,” Bruce said. “We want to see how we respond in those situations. So far, our kids have responded, but there’s still some stuff we need to address and work on. There’s no perfect game. We strive for that, and right now, we’re still striving for that.”
“After Legacy, we have a bye week and then John Jay,” Barron said. “This is a really good game to prepare us for our district opponents. Legacy is a 6A ball club, so we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
