LUBBOCK, Texas (KOSA) – It’s the first time the show has broadcasted from West Texas since 2008.
The program started just outside Jones AT&T Stadium before moving to the field for the last hour.
Texas Tech alum and Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes II served as the celebrity guest picker.
Excitement for the event was felt all throughout Lubbock. Students started camping out on Monday night.
Fans seemed to agree that it was a great atmosphere.
“Oh my gosh this is insane,” said Texas Tech graduate Ashley English. “Its so fun seeing all of the fans, all the families, all the kids. I remember being younger last time it was here so its so awesome being back and getting to share this with our family today.”
Nathan Clark, a senior at the university, said, “The environment out here is pretty crazy and its just like you can really feel it in the air. Even walking out of our apartment over there and the student line is just going down the street and its a crazy thing to see out here with this many people here. Definitely an electric day.”
Others thought that College GameDay’s trip to Lubbock was long overdue.
“I mean its well deserved so like, why haven’t they done it before. So, I feel like its definitely something that should have happened earlier,” said junior student Evan Estevez.
The show was followed by the top ten matchup between BYU and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders came out on top, defeating the Cougars 26-7.
Texas Tech has one home game left for 2025. The Red Raiders welcome the UCF Knights to the Hub City on Nov. 15.
