Health Services is having its flu shot kickoff from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Free flu shots will be available for eligible students during clinic hours. Appointments are not required but are encouraged for a faster visit, according to the clinic’s website.

The health center is near Brazos Park and offers additional services such as lab testing, sports medicine services, X-rays, gynecological services, psychiatric treatment, immunizations and a pharmacy, according to its website.

In the Northern Hemisphere, flu cases typically spike from October to May. The highest number of cases usually occurs between December and February, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The influenza virus is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs, which are part of the respiratory system, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Symptoms typically develop one to four days after people are exposed to the virus and include:

Most people with the flu get better on their own, but in some cases the infection can be deadly. Emergency symptoms to look out for in adults include:
