CORPUS CHRISTI — The Gregory-Portland volleyball team opened district play with a five-set thriller on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Unfortunately, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial pulled off the victory as they upended the Wildcats 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 15-8 in the District 29-5A opener for both teams at Veterans Memorial High School.
Vivian Alexander led Gregory-Portland with 17 kills, adding 14 digs and ace, and Lily Edwards tallied 11 kills, a block and an ace. Alice Brown had nine kills, one block and two digs on the night.
Kalli Rowe recorded 33 digs in the loss, and also had nine assists and a service ace. Kloey Cantu had 26 assists, and added 12 digs and a kill.
Kendal Dawson added three kills and two blocks, Faith Johnson had three kills, Bella Quiroga added three kills and a block. Janae Castillo had 21 digs and served up three aces, and Elayna Cortez added a kill.
