LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK)– If you’ve used a service from the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center, chances are Jenna George has had a hand in it. She now serves as their executive director, but her journey with the shelter started at a volunteer meeting.
Nonprofit to rally at Tyler pet store on Puppy Mill Awareness Day
“I was always really passionate about animals and figuring out how I could be a part of a solution,” executive director of Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center Jenna George said. “Before I knew it, I was an employee here at Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center. I worked as our rescue coordinator and have held many different positions.”
In 2024, she was named the center’s new leader and knew she wanted to make a place where not only pets and their owners feel supported, but so do the volunteers who put in so much time and energy giving to others.
“Animal welfare is a lot of things, especially on the emotional side of things,” George said. “Compassion fatigue is very real in this field, and making sure my team was cared for both physically, mentally and supported was definitely my number one priority.”
She’s also emphasized creating programs available for people and animals living in the city, including a newly launched program, “Shelter Skip Day.”
“Basically, anyone in our community can come in; it’s Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday,” George said. “You sign out a pre-approved shelter, skip day dog and just go on an adventure with them.”
Letting animals stretch their legs and experience some time away from the care and adoption center. Shelter Skip Day has already led to one adoption, with the hope of many more to come.
“It’s great to really see that our community does want to show up,” George said. “They do want to help our animals. They do want to be a part of their success stories.”
Jenna said she encourages everyone to follow their passions and know what’s worth fighting for.
“You work through the hard days, and the good days make everything worth it,” George said.
