25 years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, first responders and community members across the Coastal Bend will come together Friday to honor the thousands of lives lost and remember the sacrifices made that day.
One local tradition returns to Whataburger Field with the seventh annual 9/11 Memorial Workout, hosted by U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi and presented by LyondellBasell.
The event honors those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, through a stair climb inside the stadium.
A private stair climb for local military members and first responders begins at 8 a.m., with participants encouraged to arrive at 7:30 a.m. The presentation of colors and national anthem will take place before the climb.
Moments of silence are also scheduled for 8:59 a.m. and 9:28 a.m.
The event later opens to the general public. The Corpus Christi Hooks say gates open to the public at 9:30 a.m., with the city’s schedule listing public workout access beginning at 10 a.m.
Participation is free. Donations will be accepted, with proceeds benefiting local first responder groups.
The workout is one of several events planned across the Coastal Bend to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
