Costco isn’t about to stop investing in North Texas.

The warehouse chain is planning a new store in the city of Wylie that could begin construction this year, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. It would be a first for the municipality.

The new store would cover about 165,000 square feet with an estimated cost of approximately $40 million, the document said. Details in TDLR filings are subject to change without notice.

Costco is ramping up in North Texas as it competes with other retailers that are investing in the region. That includes rival BJ’s Wholesale Club, which entered the market earlier this year with four sites and plans for another.

At the same time, H-E-B, Walmart, Target and Tom Thumb are amping up their presence in the region as well.

Costco itself is planning to open its newest addition next month in The Colony next month, according to its website, after launching sites in places such as Celina and Prosper. In addition, it’s been eyeing a new shop in Flower Mound.

Wylie is getting more attention from retailers as Trader Joe’s has been looking at the city for a new site. The municipality, nestled on the northeastern part of D-FW, is showing growth, reaching about 64,000 people in July of last year, up from less than 58,000 in April of 2020, Census data shows.

The new store is set to be placed around 2002 W. Kirby St.
