LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock High Westerners are still searching for their first win of the season, as they welcome in unbeaten San Angelo Lake View this afternoon. In spite of their 0-2 start, Lubbock High head coach Juan Rodriguez believes his team continues to make strides on and off the field.
“Definitely the intensity is still there, I’m really proud of our kids. They had a great fought game last week (in a 21-10 loss to Coronado), and I know that we showed improvements on both sides of the ball, but definitely right now I think we would have to lean to our defense. It’s doing an amazing job. We’re able to do some things defensively we haven’t been able to do in the last couple of years”.
The Chiefs are off to a hot start this year, and that includes a 41-19 season-opening win against Fort Stockton followed with a 62-0 blanking of Snyder. Coach Rodriguez appreciates how Lake View head coach Hector Guevara has built a successful program there in the Concho Valley.
“We’re great friends and that’s one of the reasons that we play each other and we’re going to continue to do that as long as I think we’re both at the helm. I’m just really excited to see what he’s done with his program, he’s a guy that I’ve learned a lot from in the last couple of years about things that we do both within our program and the infrastructure of our program,” he said. “Their offense is really good, and they are consistent very well. They stack their plays, they know what the defense is doing and they’re going to try to exploit you where they can.”
The game kicks off 4 p.m. at PlainsCapital Park, and can be seen on KCBD.com and the KCBD Streaming App.
