The Northwest Texans could not keep pace with Arlington Lamar’s offense and find its first win in front of the home crowd Thursday night.
Lamar put up 33 straight points and totaled 433 total yards, as the Vikings picked up a 33-15 win at Northwest ISD Stadium.
The win improved Lamar to 2-1. Northwest dropped to 0-3.
Holding a 7-0 lead after a 13-yard pick six by Lamar defensive back Justin McGruder in the first quarter, the Vikings tacked on two touchdowns runs — a 22-yard carry by athlete Kenneth Onan and a 3-yard scoring sprint by running back Tayrone Thomas — in the second frame to take a 20-0 halftime lead.
Thomas was Lamar’s top rusher with 126 yards on 26 carries.
The Vikings’ momentum didn’t stop in the second half. Athlete Shahariam Thurston punched in a 1-yard rushing score less than 90 seconds into the third quarter, followed by quarterback Brian Williams’ 64-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Zarrien Howard.
Under center, Williams threw for 150 yards, completing 13 of his 18 passing attempts. The dual-threat signal caller also amassed 124 yards on eight carries.
Howard led the Vikings in receiving yards with 83 on four catches.
Northwest found the end zone late in the third quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Caris Sela. Sela also added a 19-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter, capped off by successful 2-point conversion pass by quarterback Mark Hartman to wide receiver Jake Miller.
Sela totaled 16 carries for 85 yards to lead the Texans’ ground game. Hartman completed 15 of his 24 passes for 153 yards with one interception, and found wide receiver Elijah Hawk four times for 61 yards.
Northwest looks to snap its 3-game losing streak in its first District 4-6A contest against Boswell 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17 at home.
The Pioneers (2-0) will close their non-district schedule with a Week 3 battle against Flower Mound 7 p.m. Friday at Neal Wilson Athletic Stadium.
