9/11 reflections at Texas Panhandle War Memorial 25 years later

  • September 11, 2026

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Members of the community came together this morning at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial to honor the lives lost and heroes who answered the call on September 11, 2001.

When Sharon Dunfrund was at work, she got a call asking her to tell everyone to turn on the TV and spread the word that the first tower was hit.

After that, she worked non-stop for six days with different generals and in different areas. Sharon said their first priority was the citizens of the United States.

“But they did start bringing in blankets and stuff for us to have, and cots, so that we could lie down and stuff like that,” said Dunfrund, retired Pentagon employee. “But it was just…the world had collapsed, let’s put it that way. The world as we knew it had collapsed.”

Sharon expressed the difficulty of remembering every detail of that day as they were in such disbelief of the situation.

Now 25 years later, she reflects on what many people weren’t able to see during the fall of the towers.

“I mean, they could see the stuff coming on TV and all of that, but they didn’t see the stuff in the basement and all of that. They didn’t see these people,” said Dunfrund. “What really got me is when you’d see a couple holding hands and they jump off a tower, and you know when they get to hit the ground, they’re going to be dead.”

Tim Reid, executive director of the Texas Panhandle War Memorial, grew up in New Jersey during the building of the towers. He flew over the Trade Centers the day before the attack.

“Well you know, the first thought is, I’m glad that it wasn’t yesterday, right? But after that, having that experience of flying over the World Trade Center the day before and then there on the TV seeing them attacked and coming down — I mean, it has a profound effect,” said Reid.

Reid says it’s hard to believe two buildings that took years to be built could fall in 45 minutes.

This day impacted the nation in so many way different ways and experiences and will never be forgotten. We will always remember lives of the heroes and innocent people on the planes and in the buildings.
