LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Two Lubbock County Sheriff’s deputies received the Star of Texas Award after they were injured in a crash last year on I-27 at 98th Street.
On September 8, 2025, deputies Andrew Cavazos and Jorge Martinez were assisting a motorist changing a flat tire on the side of the road when a semi-truck rear-ended their patrol units.
The two deputies were pinned between their unit and a concrete barrier. Good samaritans who witnessed the crash rushed to their aid.
Governor Abbott presented medals to honorees and family members of peace officers, firefighters and emergency first responders who were killed or seriously injured in the line of duty.
