A traveling museum is giving people in Corpus Christi an interactive look at poverty, Christian service and the impact of helping neighbors in need.
The “People of Hope” traveling museum is making a stop at St. John Paul II Academy. The free exhibit uses real stories and interactive experiences to show visitors what living in poverty can look like and how they can help people in their communities.
Taylor Logan with Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi said the museum focuses on the difference people can make by helping others.
“It is a museum that has many interactive capabilities that shows the impact of neighbors helping neighbors, the profound impact of Christian service, and it provides a lot of insight into poverty and struggle in communities and also ways to get involved in your community,” Logan said.
One interactive experience asks visitors to consider the difficult decisions people experiencing poverty may face.
“You — step into the shoes of somebody who might be struggling, and — it’s a multiple choice interactive,” Logan said. “If you were in these shoes, what would you do? What decision would you make if you had to choose between food or shelter? (It’s) putting you in the mindset of someone who might be struggling.”
After completing the museum experience, visitors are asked to consider how they can help others.
“There’s a series of prompts — about ‘How do you give hope in your community?’, ‘How do you live like Jesus?’, and it was great to read the student’s responses,” she said “Seeing how — these young people in the community are so excited to go out and spread hope and love.”
The free museum will be open to the public from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Paul II Academy.
