Houston – For Houston native Armani Greer, the journey from local theater to Hollywood is reaching a major new chapter.
Greer is starring in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?, the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved franchise. She plays Jasmine, the daughter of Angela and Marcus, who is finding her own way in love and relationships while trying to understand what she wants her future to look like.
But long before landing a role in a major Tyler Perry production, Greer was developing her craft right here in Houston.
“I was practically raised at the Ensemble Theatre in Houston,” Greer told Houston Life.
She attended Sterling High School before going on to Sam Houston State University, where she studied human resources and business. While her education gave her a practical backup plan, acting remained the passion she eventually decided to pursue full time.
After returning to theater, Greer made the move to Los Angeles about seven years ago with her sights set on television and film.
That journey eventually led her to the set of Why Did I Get Married Again?, where she found herself working alongside some of the franchise’s longtime stars.
Joining an established cast could understandably come with some nerves, but Greer said the veterans quickly made her feel welcome.
“It’s an overwhelming feeling at first,” she said. “And then you realize they’re the veterans, they take you in and they welcome you.”
For Greer, that welcoming environment made the experience even more memorable, especially as she stepped into the role of Jasmine.
In the film, Jasmine is preparing for a new marriage and hopes to have a relationship that resembles the one she sees in her parents. As she navigates her own relationship, she begins to realize that her idea of the perfect marriage may not be exactly what she thought it was.
The experience has also given Greer a glimpse of what it feels like when a major role starts to change the way people recognize you.
While out with her dad, she said someone recently recognized her from the movie, a moment that made the reality of her growing career feel a little more surreal.
Even with a major franchise now on her résumé, Greer knows the Hollywood journey is still a grind. Some scripts are coming directly to her, while other opportunities still require her to go through the traditional audition process.
For now, she’s enjoying the moment and celebrating a milestone that brings her career full circle. Coming home to Houston means reconnecting with longtime friends, revisiting some of her favorite local spots and sharing this new chapter with the city where her acting journey began.
