SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — An 18-year-old mother is facing a child abandonment charge after law enforcement says she handed her infant to a stranger at a downtown bus stop and said she no longer wanted the child.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, Karla Ibarra left her son, who is younger than 1, with a person near East Travis Street and Broadway Sunday night. The person later contacted police and reported what happened.

Ibarra reportedly returned to the area shortly afterward, but officers had already arrived and she was arrested at the scene.

Ibarra is charged with abandoning and endangering a child with intent to return. Police are investigating what led to the incident.

Under Texas’ Baby Moses Law, parents can legally and anonymously surrender an unharmed newborn 60 days old or younger at designated locations, including hospitals, fire stations and EMS stations. The baby must be physically handed to an employee.
