It’s been nearly a year in the making, and now the smokers are fired up.

Terry Black’s Barbecue has officially opened its doors in New Braunfels, bringing its Central Texas barbecue to a city known for its German roots. MySA received a special sneak peek.

The restaurant marks the barbecue company’s eighth location, creating a link between its Austin and San Antonio markets along the busy I-35 corridor.

When Terry Black’s first confirmed plans for the New Braunfels restaurant with MySA in 2025, co-owner Mark Black said the city had long been on the company’s radar.

“New Braunfels is one of the premier small cities in the state,” Black told MySA at the time. “It’s an area we wanted to be, and we love what they’ve got going on there. We’re excited to open in that market.”

Now, that vision has become a reality.

“We’re kind of building that bridge between the San Antonio and Austin markets for us,” Nick Lalich, a regional manager for Terry Black’s Barbecue, told MySA. “We’re looking to bring true Central Texas barbecue down south. That’s what this is all about, sticking to our roots, cooking on offset smokers, and bringing some really high quality products down this way.”

For diners, the setting is almost as much a part of the experience as what is coming off the smokers.

The restaurant takes cues from a traditional biergarten, with outdoor seating and a two-story deck offering additional space to eat and gather. Guests can catch glimpses of the smokers as they move through the property, with heat radiating out as they get closer. Brisket, sausage and other meats are cooked around the clock.

Lalich, eyeing the surroundings during the interview, pointed to the setting. “We’re literally standing in a beer garden right now getting interviewed,” he joked to MySA.

Inside, the Texas barbecue theme continues with spacious dining areas and an assembly-line ordering system that leads guests past the sides before they grab their barbecue and find a seat. Additional dining space is accessible by a ramp.

The result is a Terry Black’s location that blends Central Texas barbecue traditions with a setting inspired by New Braunfels’ German heritage.

But there is another piece of Texas barbecue history simmering just steps away.

Terry Black’s is opening in the same parking lot as Black’s Barbecue, a separate branch of the Black family’s barbecue legacy. Terry Black and his sons split from the family business in 2013, and the feud that followed eventually became known as the “family beef.”

Lalich acknowledged the obvious connection. “We could talk about the elephant in the room, right?” he said. “We’re in the same parking lot as the other half of our family.”

Rather than dwell on the history, Lalich pointed back to the restaurant and the way Terry Black’s is embracing New Braunfels.

“When you look inside our restaurant and you look at the timeless atmosphere that we’ve created, it’s very specific to this part of town that we’re in, and we’re really going all for it,” he said.

The company has been drawing customers from San Antonio and farther south, according to Lalich, making New Braunfels a natural stop between its existing markets. Terry Black’s also recently expanded into Houston and is targeting an opening for its San Antonio location in November.

“I’m just excited for them to eat some good brisket,” Lalich said. “I’m a [New Braunfels] resident myself, so it’s about time we get some damn good barbecue down this way.”

Now for barbecue fans and New Braunfels residents, the wait is over.
