Global sorghum conference brings world experts to Lubbock

  • September 16, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The National Sorghum Conference is being held in the United States for the first time, and it is taking place this week in Lubbock.

Experts from around the world are gathered in the city to share their thoughts on water scarcity and sustainable production.

Students get global education without leaving Lubbock

Dr. Clint Krehbiel, dean of the Davis College at Texas Tech, said students are getting a global education without leaving Lubbock. Students are learning from guest speakers, taking classes and exploring more than ten interactive displays at the 2026 Global Sorghum Conference.

“There’s people from all over the world here that are discussing everything from soil health and how the soil,” Krehbiel said.

“And interacting, again, with the world’s leaders, world-leading scientists and nutritionists and industry stakeholders and our producers in West Texas,” Krehbiel said.

Faculty learning alongside students

Students are not the only ones learning. Texas Tech faculty are, too. Krehbiel said several generations are coming together and sharing their knowledge under one roof.

“But our faculty are also then interacting with their colleagues from across the world and learning from each other about the great research that’s happening in other semi-arid regions across the world and how sorghum fits into that ecosystem from an agricultural production perspective,” Krehbiel said.

West Texas producers showcase their work

Experts came to Lubbock for the week-long conference to see more than just sorghum. It is bringing the world stage to the city, giving West Texas producers a chance to showcase their work.

“Again, where people that come from outside of West Texas can see the great work that our producers do in the dairy, in the beef, in the plant science space from an agricultural perspective in this region,” Krehbiel said.
