Records: Walmart buys 35 acres near Culebra Road in far northwest Bexar County

  • September 16, 2026

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Walmart has purchased around 35 acres of land near Culebra Road and Talley Road in far northwest Bexar County, according to public records.

The land has remained undeveloped. It is not yet known whether Walmart plans to build a store, a warehouse, a Sam’s Club or another type of facility at the site.

A Walmart spokesperson said the company is always “looking for opportunities to better serve its customers and communities,” but does not have any further details to share. The company did not say whether a traffic study had been conducted.

The purchase comes as the area has seen heavy traffic congestion and new housing developments. Residents said the growth has made everyday commutes more difficult.

“We’re honestly thinking of moving further out,” said Laura Hernandez. “Because when we moved out here it was nothing, just farmland.”

Some neighbors said a new store would be welcome.

“It’s super annoying having to go like 15, 20 minutes down the road just to get to Walmart, H-E-B,” said Alex Adams, who lives in the area.

Regina Hixson, who also lives in the area, said she expects a new store to put more strain on roads but said the community needs one.

“It’s gonna add a lot to the traffic and the population out here, of course, but we need one out here for that reason,” Hixson said.

Adams said she felt a store closer to neighborhoods like Valley Ranch could help with traffic.

“I think it would honestly help traffic because all the people way down there who really need to go to Walmart, they don’t have to go all the way down Culebra; they can just stop right there.”

Some were less certain a new development would ease congestion.

“It’s so hard to get out of my subdivision with all the traffic,” Hernandez said. ”I just think it’s probably gonna make it worse.”

TxDOT manages Culebra Road. A spokesperson told KSAT they would work on a response to our questions in several days.
