Students can celebrate and enjoy a variety of Hispanic Heritage Month events hosted by Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, of Hispanic and Latino traditions, culture and history.

Meverlyn Maisonave, Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives assistant director, said the events provide academic and cultural support for students.

“These celebrations also invite the broader campus community to learn, engage, and appreciate the many experiences that strengthen our institution,” Maisonave said.

This year’s events include a mix of traditional events like La Kermés and HSI Week, which took place last week, while bringing in new events like a carnival and food market, she said.

“These events can provide students with a sense of connection, representation, and belonging,” she said. “For all students, these events offer opportunities to learn about different perspectives and develop greater respect and understanding.”

While the events are taking place during Hispanic Heritage Month, Maisonave said they are open to anyone.

“We do a lot for all students,” she said. “Students always ask me in events, ‘Oh, do I have to be Hispanic to be able to be in this event?’ And always my answer is ‘No. This is for absolutely everyone.’”
