SAN ANTONIO — One of the biggest bands in heavy metal history is headed back to San Antonio.
Metallica will bring its M72 World Tour to the Alamodome on May 22, 2027, with Limp Bizkit and Avatar joining the band for a night that will span more than four decades of Metallica music.
The San Antonio concert is one of just 12 newly announced North American stadium dates and one of three Texas stops on the 2027 leg. Metallica will play the Sun Bowl in El Paso on May 18 before arriving in San Antonio four days later.
The Alamodome show will bring a catalog that stretches from Metallica’s early thrash-metal days and songs including “Master of Puppets” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls” to the massive mainstream success of “Enter Sandman,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “The Unforgiven.”
Formed in Los Angeles in 1981, Metallica grew from the underground metal scene into one of rock music’s most successful acts. The current lineup features James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo.
The band’s commercial breakthrough reached another level with its self-titled 1991 album, better known as “The Black Album.” It reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and began a run of five consecutive Metallica studio albums to top the chart through 2008’s “Death Magnetic,” a feat the Recording Academy says made Metallica the first act to accomplish that streak.
The M72 World Tour is built around that latest album but reaches throughout the band’s career. The tour launched in April 2023 and, according to the band, has played 99 shows in 26 countries and drawn nearly 5 million fans.
The production has also become one of Metallica’s biggest. The M72 setup places the stage in the middle of the stadium with an in-the-round design and a “Snake Pit” fan area in the center, creating a 360-degree concert experience.
Metallica will return to North American stadiums after completing its Life Burns Faster residency at Sphere in Las Vegas, which runs from October 2026 through March 2027.
The newly announced tour leg begins May 8 in Vancouver before moving through San Diego and El Paso and arriving at the Alamodome on May 22. Other stops include Kansas City, Indianapolis, Buffalo and Cleveland before the tour wraps June 19 in Salt Lake City.
Tickets for the San Antonio show will first be available through Metallica’s fan club presales beginning at 10 a.m. on Sept. 21. Additional presales will take place throughout the week.
Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. on Sept. 25.
