At 10:43 p.m. on Aug. 30, Diann Schwertner suffered a stroke. Today, by the grace of God and through the extraordinary efforts of many, she is home, recovering and already getting back to “work.”

Our family would like to thank the North Reagan County first responders and Reagan County Fire and EMS for their quick response; the CareFlite team from Big Spring for getting Diann to the specialized care she needed; and the physicians, nurses and staff at Shannon Medical Center.

We are especially grateful to Shannon’s ICU and sixth-floor teams and to Dr. Amon Zakeri and his neurology team. Their skill, compassion and kindness carried Diann — and our family — through some frightening and uncertain hours.

This experience reminded us that it is rarely one person who makes the difference. It takes all of us. From first responders and flight crews to physicians, nurses, specialists and those working behind the scenes, what one person began, another continued.

We also thank our family, friends, neighbors and communities for every prayer, call, message, visit and act of kindness.

Above all, we thank the Lord. When we look back at the timing and the many people who were there when Diann needed them, our family witnessed not only extraordinary care, but the hand of God at work.

Our hearts are full of gratitude.

Laurie Hunter on behalf of the family of Michael and Diann Schwertner
