At least nine school campuses have been affected, according to a post shared just after 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 17. Those campuses include Harlan, Sotomayor, and Taft high schools; Straus Middle School; and Reed, Mireles, Scarborough, Kallison, and Henderson elementary schools.
“We are currently experiencing an outage affecting phone and internet service at several of our campuses,” the school district shared in a Facebook post. “We have been assured that crews are currently working to restore service as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding,” it continued.
Barry Perez, Northside ISD’s Assistant Superintendent for Communications, shared with MySA that crews are still working to address the issue after a fiber cut caused widespread data outages that occurred sometime this morning before 10 a.m.
In the meantime, schools will continue to operate on a backup phone system as crews attempt to locate the cut within the schools’ grid system. There is no estimated timeline for when the system will be fully repaired.
“It’s really more of an inconvenience than anything,” Perez said.
District officials are unsure what caused the fiber cut at this time, but they did share that it’s still possible the issue could be repaired quickly, depending on the damage.
