Christi Cano is a familiar face in the Alamo City. It’s even safe to say she’s known outside of the United States.
Cano was born and raised in San Antonio. She attended Edison High School and was a four-year letter on the golf team. She played golf at Oklahoma State University on a scholarship. In golf, she was ranked among the top 20 nationally. At OSU, she won three national championships and has the rings to show for it.
For years, KSAT Sports has highlighted several coaches and athletes for Hispanic Heritage Month. Cano is who we’re starting our coverage with.
Cano wears many hats right now. She’s the head men’s golf coach, assistant athletic director and senior woman leader at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Those three titles alone make her the first to fill those roles in the school’s history.
“The community gave me so much and provided so much support,” said Cano.
She’s been at Texas A&M University-San Antonio for seven years. For her, it was necessary to come back to the city that gave her so much.
“Especially the Southside community,” she added.
Coach Cano said the managerial positions she fills are especially important to her because of her coaching background. She said she offers a different perspective. As the senior woman leader, she is the highest-ranking female in the athletics department.
“I was fortunate to kind of begin on the planning and getting to sit in on meetings with building the track and field and upgrading the softball field to be able to be a place for the team to hold games,” said Cano.
Looking back on her journey, Cano said she wouldn’t change much. But something she learned from when she was a young girl to now is something she’s reminding her team: stay confident.
“Be confident in yourself,” she added, “you’re only young once. Put 100% effort into what you’re doing because it’s here and then it’s gone in a matter of time,” said Cano.
She’s thankful to be a Texas A&M University-San Antonio Jaguar and offer her wealth of knowledge to her student-athletes.
The men’s golf team opened its 2026-27 season in mid-September at the Texas Intercollegiate.
