The Austin Fire Department said the fire did not extend beyond the closet and no apartments were damaged.
Crews ventilated the building before residents returned to their apartments. No injuries were reported.
It remained unclear whether any residents would be displaced. AFD said an electrician would need to assess the extent of the damage before that determination could be made.
