If you’re traveling near the RIM in San Antonio this weekend, expect traffic delays. Two major routes will be closed as construction continues in the area.
Beginning Friday, September 18, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close the EB and WB I-10 main lanes at the interchange and the corresponding frontage road. According to the agency, the lanes should reopen Monday, September 21, unless inclement weather occurs.
Folks traveling near UT San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas may experience a holdup as others take detours and follow posted signage. TxDOT says the closure is needed so crews can perform bridge construction for the state’s Loop 1604 North Expansion Project.
On the bright side, all flyovers at the Loop 1604/I-10 interchange will remain open.
TxDOT recommends the following guidance for drivers navigating the closures.
Continue through the I-10 interchange and keep right. Enter the EB I-10 frontage road, then use the U-turn at UTSA Boulevard to enter the WB I-10 frontage road. Keep right to re-enter the EB Loop 1604 frontage road, then enter the EB Loop 1604 main lanes via the first available entrance ramp.
If you are starting on the WB Loop 1604 frontage road, keep right and enter the WB I-10 frontage road. Use the U-turn at La Cantera Parkway to enter the EB I-10 frontage road. Stay to the right to re-enter the WB Loop 1604 frontage road.
Those on the EB I-10 main lanes will take Exit 555 to the EB I-10 frontage road. From there, they can continue on the EB I-10 frontage road through the Loop 1604 interchange and re-enter the EB I-10 main lanes at the first available entrance ramp.
Those on the WB-10 main lanes will take Exit 556B to the WB I-10 frontage road. They will continue on the WB I-10 frontage road through the Loop 1604 interchange and can re-enter the WB I-10 main lanes via the first available entrance ramp.
