SAN ANTONIO – A 19-year-old man charged in connection with the shooting death of an SAISD student last year has been sentenced to 10 years of deferred adjudication.
Fernando Flores was one of five people charged after Simon Cuevas was fatally shot.
Cuevas was found with a gunshot wound to his stomach at the corner of South Elmendorf Street and Merida Street, near Brewer Academy, authorities said.
Investigators said surveillance video showed a group of five people following Cuevas as he left school. He was later attacked.
Flores and the other suspects were originally charged with capital murder. A grand jury later indicted them on a third-degree felony charge of injury to a child.
On Thursday, Flores was granted 10 years of deferred adjudication.
If he violates the terms at any point during that period, the probation could be revoked and replaced with prison time.
Another suspect in the case, identified as 19-year-old Andrew Cantu, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Caesar Tijerina, 20, died by suicide in Laredo amid the investigation.
