LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – During ESPN’s College GameDay in Lubbock, Pat McAfee said the following: “Hey, we appreciate the hell out of you guys coming and hanging out with us this morning!”
If they didn’t know before, the GameDay crew realized, Saturday, that Red Raider fans bring a different type of energy.
“Guns up, and everything runs through Lubbock, today, for a top-10 showdown,” GameDay host Rece Davis said to open the show.
The 8- 11 a.m. broadcast was the culmination of a week’s worth of hype. Students started populating Raiderville six days in advance and spent their time enjoying the Texas Tech culture.
Even at 6:30 in the morning, you could feel the electricity in the air.
“This is a great environment,” GameDay analyst Desmond Howard told the Good Morning America crew ahead of the game. “I’m so excited for this game, BYU and Texas Tech. It’s going to be a great Saturday full of football, y’all!”
Once the sun started to come out, it was time for Lubbock to finally experience College GameDay in all its glory. Davis was joined at the desk by Howard, McAfee, Nick Saban and Kirk Herbstreit for three hours of football fun.
“I’ve been recruiting Cody Campbell to come invest some money into West Virginia,” McAfee said, “I don’t think they’re going to do it, but we’re trying.”
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire even took some time out of his very busy schedule to join the show. Davis mentioned Saturday had some historical significance for McGuire as well.
That fact, along with the love and appreciation he’s received in Lubbock, was not lost on McGuire either, as evidence by the chants of “Joey!” during GameDay.
Texas Tech rode the College GameDay momentum into Jones AT&T Stadium, where the Red Raiders defeated the BYU Cougars, 29-7.
