Arlington police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 56-year-old man on Thursday night, police said.

According to police, on Sept. 17 at 10:44 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home in the 1700 block of W. Lovers Lane in reference to a suicidal subject.

Police said the 911 caller told dispatchers that a man in the home was making suicidal comments and had access to knives.

Four officers responded to the home and were met by the 911 caller, who led them to the room where the man was, police said.

According to police, as officers approached the room, they could hear yelling and learned that a family member was also in the room with the man.

Police said officers opened the door and removed the family member from the room.

As one of the officers entered the room, the man became upset and pulled out a large knife, police said. The officer gave the man multiple verbal commands to drop the knife, but he did not comply.

According to police, the man then moved towards the officer, still holding the knife. The officer then fired his service weapon multiple times, striking the man.

Police said officers provided first aid to the man until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

No officers and other individuals inside the home were injured.

According to police, a criminal investigation led by the APD Homicide Unit will review the incident to determine if any criminal offenses were committed, and an administrative investigation led by the APD Internal Affairs Unit will determine whether the officers followed department policies and procedures. Both of these investigations are standard procedure anytime an officer uses deadly force, police said.

Per APD policy, all four officers have been placed on administrative leave.
