The tiny Buc-ee’s out in West Texas may be a popular road trip destination, akin to the Prada Marfa, but the Texas-sized gas station chain has yet to open west of San Antonio, not including the Amarillo travel center. In its absence, Texans heading west need to make sure they’ll have quality options to fuel up.
Allsup’s Convenience Store has been serving travelers for 70 years ever since it first opened its doors in New Mexico in 1956. The company is now headquartered in Fort Worth, as Texas is home to 250 Allsup’s locations, more than any other state. Abilene is home to around 12 Allsup’s stores, and one such store is getting a nearly $1 million upgrade.
The Allsup’s at 301 N. Judge Ely Blvd., Abilene, TX 79601, is set to undergo a $750,000 upgrade to “replace existing canopy with larger fuel canopy and associated fuel tanks,” according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Construction is aiming to begin work on October 1 and wrap up December 31. However, all TDLR timelines are subject to change without notice.
This is the second Allsup’s in Abilene to receive an upgrade this year. The Allsup’s at 202 W. Overland, Abilene, TX 79563, is expected to receive a $200,000 interior remodel from September 30 through November 1, according to another TDLR filing.
