The abrupt closure has sent shockwaves through the Texas college town as IKEA’s new small-format concept is ending its run in San Marcos.

The store lasted less than 14 months before IKEA announced it will close November 1, leaving shoppers with plenty to say about the short-lived location.

The company did not cite a specific reason for the decision, but said the move is part of its broader strategy to create a more affordable, accessible and sustainable IKEA experience in the U.S.

Unlike IKEA’s sprawling traditional stores, the 35,000-square-foot San Marcos concept was designed to be smaller and more convenient. For comparison, IKEA’s future 289,000-square-foot store in Live Oak is more than eight times larger.

MySA asked residents in several San Marcos Facebook groups to react to the closure.

Here’s what they had to say:

Emily Bell Rodriguez said she used the location to build her dream closet, using discounted “As Is” merchandise to bring a project she expected to cost $2,500 down to about $900.

“I will miss you Mini Ikea!!” Rodriguez wrote. “I love the concept of this little one. RIP.”

Belinda VanDyke also said she will miss the smaller location.

But others said the store never quite captured the IKEA experience.

Julia Osborn was even more blunt about her experience.

“This was the saddest IKEA location I have ever been to…,” Osborn wrote. “…It should have been a different experience.”

She said the store felt like IKEA products placed into a space that did not have the same experience as the company’s larger stores.

Jennifer Krueger visited with her teenage daughter and said it was “missing life.” She bought a stuffed shark and chocolate but said she would have been interested in the Swedish meatballs.

Brianne Corn said she never bothered visiting after learning the store did not have IKEA’s cafeteria.

“I am sure I would have made some kind of impulse buy had there been a food court,” she wrote.

Then there were shoppers who apparently never knew the store existed.

“We had an IKEA?” Dave Medrano wrote.

“Wait what? We had an IKEA???” Tony Chapman added.

Sherry Teeler said she believes the store could have done more to reach college students.

“I still feel like this was a marketing problem,” Teeler wrote. “I have talked to many students who didn’t even know it was there.”

Meanwhile, Lucy Morley said she was shocked by the closure.

“…I literally used it like so many times so I’m not sure why it wasn’t very popular,” she wrote.
