Neighbors on edge after 16-year-old shot on West Side; SAPD searches for 2 suspects

  • September 22, 2026

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are searching for two suspects after a 16-year-old was injured in a shooting on the West Side over the weekend, leaving some neighbors on edge.

Officers responded to the shooting around 6:30 p.m. Sunday near Menchaca and North Elmendorf streets and found the teenager with gunshots to the torso, according to police.

The San Antonio Police Department said investigators believe one of the suspects and the victim attended school together.

Neighbors like Maria Rodriguez said they have heard gunfire in the area before.

With two suspects still at large, Rodriguez said she feels uneasy.

“You never know what’s gonna happen, if they’re gonna come at you or something,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez’s daughter, Veronica Benavidez, said she was nervous when her mother moved to the area.

“When mama first said she was moving here, I was worried, because around this area there’s a lot of violence,” Benavidez said.

Benavidez said she worries about young people having access to guns.

“That’s horrible. If their parents let them carry guns, or I don’t know where they might’ve gotten them,” she said. ”They shouldn’t be so young like that, gang-related, shooting each other. That’s a young age.”

The shooting happened during a violent weekend in San Antonio. A 15-year-old boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the North Side, and another person was injured in the home.

KSAT has requested data from SAPD to examine the number of shootings, homicides and burglaries involving teenage victims or suspects across the city.

SAPD does not routinely track crime trends by age, so additional data analysis may be needed to determine whether teen-involved violence has increased.
