SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is calling on Gov. Greg Abbott to dedicate state resources to a backlog of Medicaid applications awaiting processing in Texas.
In a letter sent on Monday, Jones said recent news reports indicated more than 210,000 Texans were waiting for their Medicaid applications to be processed as of late August.
Medicaid serves as a critical lifeline for some of our most vulnerable neighbors, and we simply cannot allow them to needlessly go without critical benefits and assistance during this affordability crisis,” Jones wrote.
The mayor asked Abbott to “immediately dedicate resources” to address the backlog and offered assistance from her office.
Texas Health and Human Services guidelines generally require Medicaid eligibility decisions within 45 days, although some applications involving disability determinations can take up to 90 days.
Jones did not outline specific resources she wants the state to dedicate to reducing the backlog.
