Drivers heading through downtown Corpus Christi should expect traffic delays on Tuesday as a funeral procession honors retired Corpus Christi Fire Department Capt. Arnold “Buddy” Atkinson.
Corpus Christi police said Water Street between Park Street and Hancock Avenue and Shoreline Boulevard between Buford Street and Park Avenue will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the funeral.
Police are asking drivers to use caution and find alternate routes.
Atkinson served the Corpus Christi Fire Department for 29 years, working at Firehouses 1, 10, and 11 before spending the final 20 years of his career at Firehouse 13.
The department announced his passing on Sept. 9, remembering him for his leadership, work ethic and sense of humor.
“Captain Atkinson had a profound impact on the people he served alongside,” the department shared in its tribute.
Fire officials said Atkinson mentored many firefighters throughout his career, leaving a lasting impact on the department and those who worked with him.
Atkinson had been battling occupational cancer for several months. The fire department said his death is considered a line-of-duty death because of his occupational cancer diagnosis.
The department is asking the community to keep Atkinson’s family, friends and fellow firefighters in their thoughts and prayers.
