Painting the culture, history and beauty of North Texas onto a canvas would take a long time. A community conversation exploring the importance of art in North Texas will take about two hours on Sept. 28.

Join The Dallas Morning News at Ten 20 Gallery for a panel of local artists and leaders discussing why public art is important to North Texas, what resources artists need and how public art is supported in Dallas-Fort Worth.

The event will include light bites, refreshments and local art on display in the downtown Plano gallery at 1001 14th St. #200. Wesley said he hopes the event is a safe space for the community to share stories and goals in an actionable way, and for attendees to get to know local artists.

“I look at journalists as artists as well. We all tell stories in different formats,” Wesley said. “When you’re around a group of artists, it’s a gateway to a lot of different possibilities.”

Leah Waters, assistant breaking news editor at The News, will moderate the panel, featuring:

“The Art of Place” event is part of The News’ three-day pop-up newsroom in downtown Plano. Reporters, editors and visual journalists will work at Urban Rio on 14th Street during the three days. All are invited to sit and chat with journalists during the day and also attend events hosted by The News.

The News’ trust initiative launched the signature pop-up newsroom event in January 2025. The Plano pop-up is the fourth time The News has hosted a temporary newsroom open to the public to build trust and foster more enlightening conversations between journalists and North Texas communities.
