A Houston entrepreneur and former special envoy to President George W. Bush is putting his $4 million Sugar Land mansion up for sale, shortly after buying one of the region’s priciest penthouses this year.

Sada Cumber, a Pakistani American entrepreneur, was appointed by Bush in 2008 as the first special envoy to what is now known as the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, often described as the second-largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations. Cumber has founded more than a dozen companies in technology, health care and cybersecurity industries. He and his wife, Mumtaz, are also philanthropists supporting arts, cultural and global development causes.

This week, the couple started marketing for sale their custom residence in Sugar Land with an asking price of $4 million. Located at 1410 Sugar Creek Boulevard, the 8,405-square-foot estate is being marketed privately by Elizabeth Bartee, a broker associate with eXp Realty’s Bartee Real Estate Group.

The Cumbers are trading their spacious suburban residence for a 4,930-square-foot penthouse on the 34th floor of the Residences at the Allen tower near Buffalo Bayou. Listed for $4.9 million, the property is the most expensive condominium sold through the public-facing MLS this year, according to the Houston Association of Realtors. This does not include off-market transactions or properties under construction.

The Cumbers’ move reflects a lifestyle tradeoff: swapping a sprawling suburban estate for a lock-and-leave residence closer to Houston’s cultural amenities and conveniences.

“There comes a time in life when you realize you are entering what Sada and I call the ‘reward phase of life,’” said Mumtaz Cumber, in a statement. “We feel we have reached that point. Usually, people at this stage move from the city to the suburbs. We are doing it in reverse. Plus, this move brings us close to our grandkids.”

The condominium is also close to the Ismaili Center, Houston, an architecturally acclaimed cultural and civic landmark that opened last year near Buffalo Bayou.

“The Ismaili Center was an important part of our decision,” Sada Cumber added. “We see it as a beautiful Houston landmark built to serve the community for generations. Living only a few minutes away gives the location a meaning for us that goes well beyond convenience.”

They plan to relocate once they complete customizing their new  space in about 90 days, they said.

The Cumber’s Sugar Land home sits next to a golf course in the Sugar Creek master-planned community. The couple designed the 7-to-8-bedroom home with a contemporary, yet warm aesthetic filled with custom touches and artwork.

Amenities include a 712-square-foot roof terrace lined with glass railings that allow for unobstructed views of the nearby golf course. There’s also a home theater, a game room with balcony access and two elevators, one serving the main residence and a second serving a private work-and-guest wing. The home office also has its own entrance, a convenient feature for someone welcoming business guests to the property, said Bartee, the listing agent.

The entrance of the home is marked by a polished steel sculpture by an Argentinian artist. Behind the handcrafted wood front door, visitors immediately pass under a six-layered etched wood ceiling installation designed by a Jordanian artist. Throughout the home, multiple artistic light fixtures include Turkish glass lanterns, Italian crystal chandeliers and a 24-light chandelier valued at more than $185,000.

“Every little thing about this home is incredibly detailed,” said Bartee. “There is a story behind everything.”
